The LUDS has a long tradition of supporting DentAid. We hold exciting and fun-packed events throughout the year to raise money for this worthwhile charity. DentAid is a UK-based charity that provides equipment, training, and oral health servicies to hospitals, clinics, and dentists in the developing world.

The committee were shocked to learn just how great the need is for better dental care in the developing world. For example, in some parts of Africa, babies are dying of septicemia as a result of having their baby teeth dug out with sharpened bicycle spokes. Parents are mistakenly told that the soft white tooth buds showing under the gum are parasitic worms.

Buys dental equipment to improve the services that existing dentists in developing countries can provide. DentAid surgeries are all non-profit and are committed to the care of the poor.
Provides education materials that indigenous workers can use, to establish good oral health care practice.
Enables DentAid to work on ways to provide fluoride toothpaste cheaply and effectively to schools and other institutions.
Trains indigenous engineers to repair dental equipment.

DentAid is a charity that we should all definitely be supporting as dental students and dentists. Not everyone in the world is as fortunate as we are with regard to dental provision.
